Nancy Wade in the Wells Park BULLDOG:

Wade Frustrated With Lack of Political Courage; Proposes Progressive Campaign

Patrick Boylan profiled Nancy Wade on 9/4 in the Wells Park Bulldog:

"The Illinois Fifth Congressional District is blessed with a thoughtful Green Party candidate in this cycle. Nancy Wade, who sat down early in August to talk to The Bulldog, is a long-term activist, Wade has been active in Moveon.Org. Her decision to join the race was due to a simple issue with Congressman Mike Quigley: he refused to accept a citizen protest, demanding it stop before listening to the protesters demands."

Independents pose threat in 4 IL Congressional races

Nancy Wade was profiled on 9/5 on Examiner.com:

"Green Party candidate Nancy Wade is a battle-hardened social and political activist who brings her experience and passion to this Chicago north side race. From the feminist movement of the 70’s, to MoveOn.org and Occupy Wall Street, Wade always seems to be in the middle of the action. According to the candidate’s website, ‘Wade seeks to give the voters of the 5th District a progressive champion to fight for real solutions to the challenges we face.’"

"Legitimate Rape"?

Todd Akin, Republican Senate candidate in Missouri, holds the view that when women are “legitimately” raped we are able to block conception by an implied magical ability of the female body. He’s not just conservative; he wants to take us back in time to the early seventies, when there were passionate public debates over what rape “really” is.

Gun Tragedy

The national spotlight right now is on the disturbed young man who opened fire in a Colorado theater, killing and injuring 70 people. Our nation’s latest shooting tragedy.  Rather than reacting to the “latest” tragedy we should be engaged in an effort to get the weapons of mass destruction – guns intended to kill people – out of our society.

The media is engaged in an orgy of questions about why this particular shooting happened. It happened for the same reason every other shooting happens. Gun tragedies always have one thing in common. Guns.

Corporations are Not People

We've got to get Big Money out of our government. This January I organized a rally in support of Move to Amend in Chicago, a citizen's group working to overturn the Citizen's United Supreme Court decision giving corporations all the rights of individuals.

Now, due to the hard work of the Move to Amend group in Chicago Alderman Joe Moore has introduced a resolution into the Chicago City Council. This resolution calls on the US Congress to propose a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. The full text is below.

Let’s support Ald. Moore and the Move to Amend. http://movetoamend.org/

Join Nancy at the public hearing on this resolution on: Monday, July 23rd, 10AM-Noon, City Hall, 121 N LaSalle, Room 201A

National Defense Against Climate Change

It is time that our government takes its collective head out of the sand and recognizes the dangers of global warming. As your representative I would call immediately for a national plan of defense addressing the climate crisis based on the Green Party platform.

The Green Party platform comprehensively addresses ecological sustainability and climate change. It states, “Climate change is the gravest environmental, social and economic peril that humanity has ever met…It is a tragedy unfolding in slow motion.” We must take the steps and make the hard choices to prevent that tragedy from continuing to unfold.

Real Healthcare Reform

Today the US Supreme Court let stand the Affordable Care Act (ACA). ACA resulted from a failure by President Obama and the Democrats to come out swinging for us in 2008 on universal healthcare. Although voters handed Obama and the Democrats the presidency and both houses of congress the Democrats never seriously fought for what we need in this country – guaranteed healthcare for all. Instead, ACA is yet another example of the power of corporations, specifically health insurance and drug companies, to buy tremendous influence in our government and to stymie the will of the people.

Schools Safe for LGBT Youth

As a former Chicago Public Schools teacher I saw first-hand the difficulties LGBT youth experienced in schools, both at the hands of students and of teachers.  The atmosphere for LGBT youth in most Chicago schools is at best unfriendly and at worst hostile.

Public School Teachers are Heroes

On the petitioning trail I am often asked what I think about teachers and for-profit charter schools. My reply is that there is lots of research that shows such schools do not do any better than public schools with the same population of students, and often do worse.

As a former CPS teacher I believe every public school teacher deserves a gold medal for every day they walk in the classroom and take on the monumental challenges thrown at them by society's lack of support for their students and for teachers themselves.
